BAYSIDE
CONTINUES ON
FOR “BEATZ”
by Mike Ferrari
Aural Fix readers have been following the tumultuous rise of local
heroes Bayside. Since their formation in the winter of 2003 the band
has been overcoming obstacles on their long road to success.
Frustrated after relentless touring in support of debut album, the
the rhythm section left. The band rallied and found themselves a new
drummer and bassist, John “Beatz” Holohan and Nick Ghanbarian.
Immediately the band found a renewed sense of purpose. Singer/ guitarist
Anthony Raneri took the reigns of songwriter, and the band as a whole
became more involved in the lyrical process as a whole.
This past August the self titled album Bayside was released and the
band toured with Vendetta Red, building on that success they embarked
on the “Never Sleep Again Tour” which features some of
Victory’s hottest acts, including Aiden,Silverstein, and headliners
Hawthorne Heights. It was during this tour that the Miller Place native
John “Beatz” Holohan was tragically killed early in the
morning of October 31st, while passing through an icy stretch of interstate
in Wyoming, in the Bayside tour van.
After spending weeks mourning their losses, singer/guitarist Anthony
Raneri and guitarist Jack O’Shea have rejoined the Never Sleep
Again Tour in St. Petersburg, Florida as an acoustic duo (bassist
Ghanbarian is still recovering from severe back injuries).
Solidarity
between the bands on this tour was illustrated after Holohan’s
death, when each member of the tour got commemorative tattoos with
Bayside’s bird logo.
The easygoing Holohan enjoyed talking to reporters and label staffers,
even while on the road. “His phone calls and daily e-mail updates
were always a reminder as to why I am in this business,” Victory
founder Tony Brummel said in a statement. “Every time I heard
from him he told me that he was ‘having the time of his life.’”
Holohan had drummed for a many local Long Island acts including the
successful Daughter Judy, fronted by powerhouse vocalist Pat D’Auria.
The band had been nominated for a Long Island Music Award during their
peak. Holohan also did a brief stint with Jason Liebman and the Uprising.
“He was a great guy and friend whom we were proud to know and
share a stage with,” said Liebman. He had also drummed for 1X
(One Time) and other area acts.
The “Never Sleep Again Tour” makes it way to New York
at the Nokia Theater in NYC, November 4th. Also friends will be having
a special fundraiser show for Holohan's family, December 15th at the
Cardozo High School in Bayside. All of the bands playing were close
friends of John: Daze, A Late Design, The Sleeping, Action Action,
Bayside. There is a John Holohan Bayside Memorial Fund on the Bayside
web site as well as the Victory Records site, as well as many fellow
emo and punk sites.
