MUNCHABA OPEN MIC GOES VINTAGE
by Mike Ferrari
Once upon a time on a magical island of Open Mics, there was a place
called Munchaba. Every Tuesday minstrels from far and near would come
to play for the likes of princes, like that of Harlan Friedman, a
local Lord of Radio on WLIR and the BONE.
Over the years, after many battles with other local Open Mic fiefdoms
(like that at the once powerful Downtown, hosted by Rick Eberle and
tied into WBAB and Lord Fingers) – the mighty Open Mics went
the way of the dragon, leaving the minstrels foraging for stages to
play upon. And whilst they found many among the bars and taverns of
the Island Long, none quite had the magic of Munchaba.
On the twelve of November the original Baron of Munchaba, Bobby Newman
brought the magic back to Munchaba, and christened it as the Vintage
Lounge – and the Minstrels rejoiced! To celebrate Johnny Bhive
who many say that his Long Island career was launched from the stage
of the Open Mic at Munchaba, was called upon to play live at the grand
opening.
On the Tuesday following the Vintage Lounge regained it’s place
among Open Mics on Long Island. Once again minstrels gathered from
far and near and played to the people, whilst Ed Ryan and Harlan Friedman
presided over the festivities.
And on this eve I did see perform many a minstrel, one group of whom
stays in my mind still... Joe Lies; who cleverly promoted his upcoming
gig with postcards that were quite smart in design and a performance
most pleasing.
A new chapter has begun... (TOP OF PAGE)
