THE CRUSHER / COMMANDO
at Schraeders, Lindenhurst 10/29
by Mike Ferrari

It just wouldn’t be Halloween without seeing Sean Sanders
performing with one his bands, or in this case, two of his bands!
This year the festivities occurred in the unassuming local tavern
known as Schraeders, on Hoffman in Lindenhurst. Decorated for the
holiday with plenty of kitchsy toys and candies, two thirds of the
Crusher (formerly known as Jones Crusher), Tom “Crusher”
Cavanagh on bass and Jim “Idol” stood in ready position,
beside them lay a black coffin, sans front man Sean Sanders.
Dry ice smoke poured out across the floor and a guitar buzz filled
the room. Suddenly a karrang of guitar squealed and the cardboard
coffin erupted into pieces revealing a caped and horned Sanders
who leaped into rock guitar position and began banging out Crusher
classic, “Welcome To The Show”.
From there on it was Crusher classic after classic, drawing from
over a decade of suburban punk rock and roll, as well as the trio’s
nearly exhausting repository of punk covers.
As tradition at a Crusher show there was much audience participation
and many a sing-a-long. At the end of the blistering set, Sanders
passed off his Gibson to Crusher fan Anthony Deblasio who kept the
feedback roiling, as Sanders attempted to crawl back into the destroyed
cardboard coffin.
Following the Crusher came a slight change in costume as Sanders
and Cavanagh joined up with drummer Donny “Ramone” and
singer “Dave “Cretin” to become the Ramones cover
band Commando. The Crusher had already brought the place to a frenzy
and Commando kept it up with a great mix of Ramones classic singles,
and less obvious album cuts.
You can catch the Crusher at Shraeders again Saturday December 17th!
